Best suited to
- Statement islands and tall banks with real optical depth
- Metallic titanio and taupe schemes alongside brass or dark stone
- Rooms with strong sunlight where a lacquer might shift tone
- Buyers who want a glass look without the fragility of real glass
SmartGlas is a polymer glass matt front with an anti-fingerprint surface, and it is the most distinctive material in the Schueller catalogue. A polymer glass panel gives you the optical depth of real glass, where the colour appears to sit a few millimetres below the surface, without the weight, the fragility or the risk of a chipped edge that a true glass front carries.
Six colours are offered: a cool crystal white, a warm taupe, a titanio metallic, ecru, onyx black and lava black. The taupe and titanio are the two that make the material worth specifying. A metallic in polymer glass shifts noticeably as you move past it, catching light along the panel in a way no lacquer can reproduce, and titanio in particular reads as a warm gunmetal that works beautifully against brass and dark stone. The two blacks have extraordinary depth, closer to a piece of dark glass than to a painted door.
Practically, polymer glass is shock resistant and colour stable, so unlike a real glass front it will not chip if a pan handle catches it, and unlike a lacquer it will not shift tone in a room with strong sunlight. The AFP coating handles the obvious concern with a glass-look surface, keeping the panels clear of hand marks. Because the material is a statement, we most often specify it partially: a SmartGlas island or a bank of tall units against a matt lacquer perimeter, which gives you the optical effect where it counts and keeps the overall figure sensible at price group 6. Rigid built cabinets, fully assembled, soft-close hardware and the 5 year Schueller guarantee.
